Xteink X4 Pro: How to Install CrossPoint Firmware

Your Xteink X4 Pro can read books straight out of the box, but the stock software leaves a lot on the table: no KOReader sync, broken formatting in non-English text, and missing book covers on the home screen. If you want better library control, font choices, and syncing, install CrossPoint firmware on the Xteink X4 Pro.

CrossPoint replaces the reader’s existing firmware, so treat the process like a small operating-system swap, not a casual app install. You need a stable cable connection, a Chromium-based browser, and a few uninterrupted minutes.

Why Install CrossPoint on the X4 Pro

The stock firmware on the X4 Pro works fine for basic reading, but customization is limited and non-English text often renders with broken formatting. CrossPoint addresses these gaps and adds real customization on top; more on that below.

One tradeoff worth knowing about upfront: CrossPoint removes swipe gestures for page turns. You can tap the screen or use the side buttons, but swiping left or right inside a book does nothing. If you rely on swipe navigation daily, that’s a real adjustment period.

Custom firmware also changes the device at a low level. You should only continue if you feel comfortable restoring the stock system if something goes wrong.

Pre-Installation Requirements

Set everything up before you open the flashing page. A rushed firmware flash creates problems that a five-minute checklist prevents.

You need:

An Xteink X4 Pro with enough battery charge (above 50%) so it doesn’t power down midway.
A computer with Chrome, Edge, Brave, or another Chromium-based browser
A proprietary magnetic pogo pin cable, the one supplied with your Xteink device
A stable USB connection between the reader and your computer
A few minutes without sleep mode, cable movement, or browser interruptions

Use Chrome for the least friction. The web flasher talks to the reader through the browser, so the X4 Pro may not appear as a normal drive in Finder or File Explorer during the firmware step.

Turn the X4 Pro on and return it to the home screen. Do not leave a book open. Press the Home button first, then confirm that the reader stays awake.

Browser extensions can also get in the way. Disable pop-up blockers, ad blockers, and privacy tools for the flashing session. The CrossPoint site needs permission to open a device-selection window.

Step-by-Step CrossPoint Installation on the X4 Pro

Connect your powered-on Xteink X4 Pro to your computer using your pogo pin cable. Make sure the device is on the homepage.

1. Open the Flash Tool

Launch Chrome or another Chromium-based browser. Go to the CrossPoint Reader website and click Get CrossPoint —> Flash Firmware.

The official site lists the Xteink X4 Pro among devices that can run CrossPoint and directs you to flash firmware from your browser.

The wording may change as the site updates, but you want the browser flasher, not a general product page.

2. Select Xteink X4 Pro

Choose Xteink X4 Pro from the device options. Never select firmware built for the X3 or standard X4, even if the readers look similar.

Then choose the newest X4 Pro release (Currently CrossPoint 1.6.0rc) offered by the official flasher.

You may also see an option for a custom .bin file. Leave that alone unless you already have a verified firmware image that you intend to flash manually.

3. Keep the Reader Awake

Confirm that your X4 Pro stays powered on and stays on the home screen. Connect the pogo-pin cable to the computer and reader.

Click Flash CrossPoint 1.6.0rc on the CrossPoint page. A small browser window should list an available serial device. Select the X4 Pro, then click Connect.

If the device list stays empty, stop clicking Flash. Check the cable connection, keep the reader awake, and try a different USB port. The reader will not necessarily appear as a regular storage device on your computer, but Chrome should detect it through the web-flashing prompt.

4. Flash the Firmware

After you choose the device, the flasher starts writing CrossPoint to the X4 Pro. Keep the cable still. Do not close the browser, turn off the reader, or let the computer sleep.

The CrossPoint flash normally finishes faster than a full stock-firmware restore. The exact time varies with your computer and connection, so watch the browser status instead of guessing.

When the page says the flash has finished, disconnect the pogo-pin cable. The reader will not jump straight into CrossPoint on its own.

5. Reset and Boot Into CrossPoint

Now press the reset button on your device. After pressing reset, hold down the power button. The CrossPoint logo appears on screen. You are now running CrossPoint firmware on your Xteink X4 Pro.

Here is a detail that may catch you off guard. You must press that reset button, or you will spend hours stuck at this exact step because the device will not reboot on its own. It does not. Press reset, then hold power.

That is it. You now run CrossPoint on the Xteink X4 Pro.

Experience Of CrossPoint After Installation

CrossPoint changes the X4 Pro from a tiny device with limited stock reading tools into a reader you can tune to your own habits. Here is what improves right away:

Advanced Typography

Stock software struggles with non-English languages, often breaking hyphenation and text flow. CrossPoint cleans up rendering across complex scripts, including Swedish and other European languages. CrossPoint supports proper justification, hyphenation, footnote links, superscripts, and language-aware text handling. If you read EPUBs with languages beyond English, those improvements can change a messy page into one that feels like a book.

Font Management

Crosspoint includes a built-in font manager. Connect your X4 Pro to a Wi-Fi network, open the font manager from the settings menu, and download from a list of available fonts. Popular choices like Bitter, Bookerly, and Literata install in seconds. You do not need to sideload font files through a computer.

Library

CrossPoint can show recent books on the home page while still letting you organize files in folders on the microSD card. You can arrange books by author, genre, series, or any folder structure that makes sense to you.

Recent releases also support optional SD-card plugins through a plugin-store package. This feature targets tinkerers, so leave it alone until you feel settled with the base firmware.

Touch Controls

If you prefer using only the physical buttons, Crosspoint lets you disable the touchscreen for reading. Go into Settings, find “Touch Reader Controls,” and turn it off. Now you can hold the X4 Pro with your thumb resting on the screen without accidentally turning pages. The home button still works even when touch controls are off, so you can always exit a book.

Front Light Controls

The front-light controls remain available after the switch. Swipe down from the top to adjust brightness and warmth, or switch the light on and off from that panel.

The front light on Crosspoint runs dimmer than the stock firmware at the same percentage. That is actually good news for nighttime readers. On stock firmware, you will even low brightness settings are too harsh in a dark room. With CrossPoint, you can read comfortably at around 5% or 6% brightness in complete darkness without the screen washing out.

Wireless KOReader Sync and Calibre Support

CrossPoint integrates wireless syncing with KOReader platforms. You can sync reading progress, highlights, and bookmarks across multiple readers, phones, and tablets. You can also spin up an ad-hoc local hotspot to transfer EPUB files from your phone or use Calibre wireless management on the go.

Dark Mode

Crosspoint adds a full dark mode toggle that inverts the display. White text on a black background. If you read on E Ink devices in dimly lit rooms, dark mode paired with a low front light setting gives you a comfortable, low-contrast look. Not everyone likes it on E Ink screens, and that is fine. You can toggle it on and off from the same pull-down light panel.

Book Cover Display

One of the smaller but more satisfying changes: Crosspoint shows book covers on the home screen. The stock firmware does not display them. When you land on the home page, you see the cover art of your most recently read book front and center. It is a small detail that makes the device feel polished.

Missing Features

Some smaller features are still missing or broken since this remains a beta release (Release Candidate). Percentage-based page jumping doesn’t currently accept manual entry, and deleting bookmarks through the intended “hold to delete” gesture doesn’t consistently work yet. Bluetooth support also isn’t available in the current build. None of these gaps are dealbreakers, but they’re worth knowing about before you commit to daily use.

Future Firmware updates can change the above details and experience, so check a newer firmware version before you flash again.
